On August 14, 1992, at approximately 15:40, the residents of Mbale, Uganda and its outskirts were frightened by several loud detonations in the sky. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a trail of smoke behind the meteoroid body, but no fireball was observed. The loud explosion with shock waves, was followed by a shower of stones that literally rained down on factories and schools in a densely populated area. One young boy was reportedly struck on the head by a 3 gram piece. An expedition was organized by the Dutch Meteor Society, the Leiden Observatory and Makerere University between August 29 and September 5; it located 48 impact positions of masses between 27.4 kg and 0.1 g. Together with material found in the months after the fall, 426 stones were recovered with a total mass of 108 kg. Mbale is classified as an L5/6.
