Iron, Ataxite (IVB-ANOM). This beautiful meteorite was first found in
the Chinga stream, a tributary of theUpper Yenisei, in 1913, near Tanna Tuva, Turvinskaya, Russia. It is a very nice rare
nickel-rich (16.56%) Ataxite. "At nickel concentrations higher than 13 -14
percent the fine octahedrite structure grades into a microscopic widmanstatten
structure that is not visible to the unaided eye...the meteorite is composed
essentially of a fine-grained mixture of taenite and kamacite ie. plessite."
Many specimens have now been found, most are
ripped and torn like Sikhote-Alin shrapnel. Chinga is very nice when cut and
polished to a near mirror finish. It is not widely in collections, but more has
recently been found at the site and is now available to collectors. Total known weight of Chinga is
estimated to be around 300 kilos.
