Aouelloul Impact Glass |
| For Sale |
Aouelloul glass was formed by a large meteorite impact which turned silica rich rock to natural glass. The Aouelloul crater of Mauretania, West Africa was discovered about 1951. It was originally thought to be an explosion crater by its finder, but an impact origin of the crater is confirmed by Re-Os isotope studies of the target sandstone and glass found around the crater rim. The glass shows the presence of a distinct extraterrestrial component. The crater is only about 390 meters across, about 1/3 the width of Barringer (Meteor) Crater in Arizona. Its age is 3.1 ± .3 million years old. This impact glass is "very" hard to get and is rarely available. What follows is a direct quote from my supplier. "I have collected them myself at the crater earlier this year, and I can tell you that it's very difficult to get them. After a few days of searching, I got a sunstroke and I was out for a few days. These are ALL I have, and I'm not sure that I will go back again because it's a terrible ride and I'm not sure if I can find enough to make another Kg." In other words the source is pretty much cleaned out and this may be the last large lot to come out.
