       This meteorite is NWA 2987 meteorite. It is classified as a basaltic shergottite with vesicular glass pockets and trapped melt inclusions. In Nov 2005 a very fresh specimen was found containing veins and patches of shock-produced vesicular glass, it also had distinctive late-stage, partially crystallized igneous melt inclusions within iron-titanium oxide grains. This specimen was given the name NWA 2975. Since then additional specimens totaling about 1 kilogram have been found and classified under different names including NWA 2986, 4766, 4783, 4857, 4880 and others. This piece is part of a batch of 82 grams classified under the number NWA 2987. The name has been submitted but is provisional until published in the Meteoritical Bulletin.  These stones are the freshest of the basaltic shergottites except zagami. Martian meteorites seem very expensive selling for $1000+ per gram. However $1000 per gram is only $200 per carat which is the equivalent to a very poor quality diamond. Martian meteorites are much rarer than diamonds however. The total weight of all the Martian meteorites found to date is only about 91931.4 grams. That is 459657 carats or less than 1% ( to be exact 0.938%) of the 49 million carats of diamonds recovered by "one" company, De Beers Group, in a "single" year, 2005. The pieces below are priced at only $450 per gram or $90 per carat.
